Algorithm is an ambient music trio that uses a combination of performance poetry and jazz improvisation to create unique moods and soundscapes featuring both electronic and acoustic media.
Algorithm formed in 2012 as a instrumental duo, and expanded to a trio setting after their
"Words and Music" performance at the Aarhus Gallery in Belfast, Maine, in June of 2012. Their
first major performance came as part of the "Elegant Enigmas" show of the work of Edward Gorey at the Portland Public Library in December of 2012. In June of 2013, Algorithm performed a
sunrise and sunset concert in celebration of the Summer Solstice at Heritage Park in Belfast.
Despite the early show time of 4:00am, the performance was well attended and set the stage for a similar performance in 2014.
Underneath Oblivion was released in June 2017.
Algorithm consists of Mike Whitehead, Tom Luther, and Jacob Fricke.
Mike Whitehead is a first call trumpeter, and owner/operator of Kat Trax Recording in Thomaston, Maine. His album "Habitat" is available through Band Camp, and he is the leader of the Mike Whitehead Group, People of Earth, and a frequent sideman with local pickup groups.
